The Great Fontain (ukr. “Velykyi Fontan”) – is a famous Odesa’s district with a large park area. There are well-equipped beaches, convenient infrastructure with a recreational atmosphere. This is a great option for families with children and elderly.
There is good ecology, clean beaches, well-developed transport interchange, low building density, many educational institutions, remote location from transport, historical monuments, a large number of health facilities among the advantages of this area.
So, there are some disadvantages. Sometimes you have to go down the stairs to the beach, because of the distance from the city center and there are many tourists in summer. Also, some establishments can only be reached by car, possible traffic jams, no large parking lots, strong gusts of wind and high humidity in autumn and winter.
History
Velykyi Fontan – a seaside resort in the southeast of Odesa. It owes its fame to the freshwater springs that saved the city before the advent of the plumbing. Сountry settlements arose right here, and the townspeople even coined the phrase "not a fountain" to denote low water quality.
This area had an uneven rocky terrain and looked like a suburb with lots of greenery two and a half centuries ago. Over time, the Velykyi Fontan became more convenient and safer: the rocky slopes were terraced and alluvial sandy beaches were created artificially.
Atmosphere
Fontan can be geographically divided into Small, Middle and Large. Historically, these neighborhoods had different dynamics. The stations, which were closer to the city center, had a lot of factories, various trade establishments and stores. Also, there were bathing and sea baths for locals and tourists in the Middle Fontan.
Today, the atmosphere of life on Velykyi Fontan is reminiscent of these historical origins. Life is in full swing within the first stations: students are studying, businesses are running, restaurants and cafes are operating. However, everything seems quiet and peaceful at the 16th station.
Lifestyle
Living on Fontan has always been prestigious, because of proximity to the sea, lots of greenery, calm and comfortable. Only wealthy people could afford a cottage in this area, others rented small rooms here. Nowadays, Fontan is more accessible for lovers of the sea and leisurely life.
Infrastructure
Velykyi Fontan is an intensively developed district. The architecture of old buildings and public institutions is complemented by new buildings, which are liked by young people for their beautiful locations, modern appearance and developed infrastructure.
There are many shops, supermarkets, shopping malls, restaurants and cafes, bank branches, medical facilities, sports clubs, beauty salons and entertainment venues for a comfortable life. There are also educational institutions in the district, such as universities, language centers, kindergartens, schools, sports and creative sections. The attraction of the Fountain is the Trasa Zdorov'ya.
Regarding the transport interchange.
The trams are the most famous means of transportation between the stations. There are trams #18 and #19 and minibuses: #185, 127, 223, 259, 191, 215.
